Seen one safari lodge, seen them all? Yes. I also once thought that too. And while many lodges do mimic each other in many ways this cannot be said for Village D’Afrique.
Located in the heart of Bela Bela, a quick 1 hour 45 miuntes from Johannesburg and 15 minute drive from Nylstroom (Modimolle) this little gem offers you a diverse safari experience with its 4 luxury tents perfectly scattered throughout the Shakila Lodge.
Villa D’Afrique recently opened commercially and is as intimate and unique as they come. With only 2 lodges on the property this lodge offers privacy at its best.
With only 4 luxury tents each having a full on-suite bathroom and a kitchen, lounge, dining and swimming area to enjoy together, this destination will offer you everything of the best.
The tents are spacious and have a very luxe vibe to them, each having a big double bed, a big spacious bathroom and outdoor showers, each tents overlooks the gorgeous African bush. The décor is modern and understated yet lush – and the king size bed guarantee you the best sleep of your life. The tents are situated far apart from one another, surrounded by endless views of the beautiful bush.
The lodge caters for the individual traveller, couples or a big group of friends. Guests are able to book the entire lodge out, of which they encourage due to the layout of the lodge. Which is perfect for large families, groups or friends travelling together – this also means you can do as you wish with no itinerary or schedule that you need to follow, just the indulgence of enjoying downtime in the bush and settling at your own pace.
The main lodge is where breakfast, lunch and dinners (self-catering) can be made and served, either on the sunny deck that overlooks the mountain, around a large table next to the open plan kitchen or in the beautifully decorated lounge. When the weather is good, plan for an evening spent eating dinner around the campfire in the nearby boma – look up at night sky and whizz at all the stars will roasting marshmallow’s.
The extremely welcoming and bubbly Lyzette, Alfread and their team run everything like a well-oiled machine. Expect to be woken up by Alfread with coffee and rusts in bed – now if this is not luxe then I don’t know what it
Days can be spent relaxing on the wooden deck, besides the pool. The lodge is completely private and the only noise you hear are that of the beautiful birds singing, the zebras coming to drink water or the monkeys swinging in the trees. The reserve is home to many kinds of buck, zebra, giraffes and cute little animals of the African Bush. This allows one to go on long walks through the bush or take a trip down the little river to braai and relax.
There is also a burnt down old house that one can visit for a beautiful view over the lodge, the river and the bush and take some spectacular pictures listening to the sound of nature.
In an age where the greatest luxury is time and time well spent – you would be pressed to find a more lavish, unique and secluded residence to enjoy your weekend.
I highly recommend you take a trip down to this beautiful lodge! We had the most amazing weekend, well rested, in nature, appreciating the beauty that is Africa!
As AA Milne so powerfully wrote “Rivers know this; there is no hurry. We shall get there some day”. Some times the most productive thing you can do is relax, and the same is true at Village D’Afrique – leave your daily life at the door and revel the magic and peace of the incomparable African bush.
